52 Portraits Project – 12/52

Welcome to week twelve of my 52 Portraits Project.  If you have missed the earlier weeks start at week 1 here, which includes more information about the project.

12/52.  Peace. Or an opportunity to dress up and pose! Celebrating the UN International Peace Day at preschool dressed all in white. I love that you are exposed to big ideas and dreams, and that your dad and I have an opportunity to have you see the bigger picture in our world. Your grandmother escaped persecution as a refugee to find peace in Australia. Your mum lived in a country where the colour of your skin meant peace was not for you. I hope you see peace in your lifetime, and I know you will believe in it and stand for it. You and your sister can, and do make a difference. To see more about the United Nations International Day of Peace and how you can make a difference in your kids classrooms, read my previous post.

United Nations International Peace Day

Friday the 21st September was the United Nations International Day of Peace.  We celebrated the day at my daughter’s Montessori Preschool.  The children all dressed in white or blue (colours of the Peace flag) and a ceremony was held with a short speech followed by singing of the Peace Song and raising of the Peace flag next to the lit Peace candle.  We were invited to light our own candle from the flame.  We finished with a picnic for the students, parent, staff and carers.

I was so proud to be part of the celebration and for my daughter to learn about what it means, and to know that she can make a difference.

As you can imagine, the outfit was prepared and perfected, and she was happy to pose.I have already suggested that it be something added to my daughter’s primary school calendar – to be marked in some way.  Here is a link suggesting 10 ways to promote peace in your classroom.

52 Portraits Project – 11/52

Welcome to week eleven of my 52 Portraits Project.  If you have missed the earlier weeks start at week 1 here, which includes more information about the project.

11/52. Missing. Trying to get back to me after a winter of illness, weakened immunity and too much time out of my routine. I am not a good sick person but I think I am learning that to get back to me, I need rest, good food, early nights and no pressure. The world will go on while I redisover me.

Spring is all around me

Well, it was, earlier today.  I went for a walk and I could smell the sweet scent of new flowers and hear the tentative clicks of the cicadas.  There was a heat in the air and the breeze was warm.  So much hope, so much anticipation, like the start of something wonderful.  I love this time of year.
A perfect time for a photo shoot too.  Have a look at my Spring Offer, recently released.

52 Portraits Project – 10/52

Welcome to week ten of my 52 Portraits Project.  If you have missed the earlier weeks start at week 1 here, which includes more information about the project.

10/52.  Discovery.  You asked us a million times to take you to the Powerhouse Museum today.  It was a familiar request.  You said you wanted to see the inventions and pull levers and press buttons and make things go.  Your sister said she wanted to go because they had ice-cream!  So we did.  We bought an annual pass and we had a ball and we stayed for hours and you loved it.  You are such a thinker and a science lover and you want to know how things work.  May you never lose your sense of discovery.

Spring is in the air – time to book a session with me

I love Spring, that promise of what is to come.  In Sydney we have had a fabulous start to Spring with temperatures 9 degrees above normal on some days.  Heavenly.

So, if you are thinking about booking a professional family photo shoot, now is the time to get out your diary.

I have an upcoming Spring session with this beautiful boy and his family – I can’t wait!

Love, joy and memories are often in the details

Some of my favourite images of my kids (and clients) are the detail shots.  Those images that capture something small, but oh so powerful.  All it takes is one look at that image and the complete memory of that time comes flooding back.  I’m not sure that we would remember those details without those specific images and often we forget to capture them.  I am guilty of that too and get into the habit of head and shoulders shots.  I have to remind myself.  My last blog post shows a detail image that really captures the cold first moment of jumping into the Spring water.  You can see the cold in her pose!

Here are some more examples of what I mean by capturing the details.

Learning to ride – The awkward path, the inappropriate shoes, the obstacles, the hill.  So proud of her.Flowers on a bushwalk – We went on a bushwalk in the blue mountains, and we picked these gorgeous yellow flowers on the way home and she held them out to me.For the love of bugs – My big one is a nature girl and loves bugs, not just the pretty ones.  We found this one on our pea plants.Chubby bubby legs – Those oh so cute little legs that they grow out of so quickly.  It’s lovely to have a reminder of that time.Oh, her curls – At 4 and a half she has only just had her first hair cut and those curls of “newborn-ness” are gone.  I loved those curls.Tiny fingers, big connections – I love seeing her tiny hand in mum’s, that beautiful connection.  And the rings, another connection.Eating pose – She used to sit like this for eating, with leg raised.  So although her grin is infectious, I focused on the foot, because that is why we were all laughing.First day of pre-school – Hidden by the plant she was asked to bring on her first day.  It makes me remember how tiny she was behind that “average sized” plant.Little Picasso – Capturing a detail shot and combining it with another related shot to create a diptych, is a great way to tell more of your story.Fun at the beach – I combined a number of images to create a collage and show the whole story of our afternoon.  The heat, the sand, the vivid blue sky, the sun, the exhaustion.  There are a number of detail shots in my gallery – I always like to include them for my clients, and they are very popular.

So, I encourage you to find the unique moments around you and embrace and capture the detail in your life.

52 Portraits Project – 9/52

Welcome to week nine of my 52 Portraits Project.  If you have missed the earlier weeks start at week 1 here, which includes more information about the project.

9/52. Spring. The first weekend of Spring and you and your sister were determined to go in the water. You wanted to try out your new bathers in the surf, despite the fact that I was in jeans, jumper and scarf. Thank goodness for a hot shower straight after, my crazy water loving girls. The first of many beach visits to come.
